In a Reggio Emilia program, children learn through child‑led investigations. A two‑month project, studying the life cycle of a butterfly, gives children time to explore ideas, ponder on concepts, and develop a clear understanding of the metamorphosis process.
Over 8 weeks, children create paper caterpillars, play with a variety of materials, ask questions, and explore dirt, leaves, twigs, and everything connected to the butterfly life cycle. The teacher observes as the child explores the environment and supports discoveries.
